John Blackadder. Troqueer church Dumfries, Scotland



John Blackadder was one of the most zealous and popular of the Covenanter`s field preachers and preached at many conventicles, often in the companionship of John Welch of Irongray, the great grandson of John Knox.
He spent many years travelling the country preaching and was thirty seven years old when he was ordained minister of the parish of Troqueer in the Stewartry of Kirkcudbrightshire in 1652.

Im memory of John Law Hume, Dumfries, Scotland.



Memorial in Dock Park The Titanic sank, and a band played 'Nearer my God to thee...', until the tragedy was over, all the members going down with the ship. John Law Hume was a member of of the band who sang on until his last breath!

The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust is not far from Dumfries. I went this week with my friend Tom. There are not many places where you can see close up over fifty wild swans. Every day while the swans are present they are fed. it is a great site.

Rosefield Mill, Dumfries, Scotland.



Charteris, Spence and company set up Rosefield Mill and in the First World War changed production to the manufacture of khaki and French Army blue cloth. After the war the mills did not recover their old markets and were apparently unwilling or unable to produce cheaper cloth for the rapidly developing multiple tailoring businesses. The Ewart Library, dumfries, Scotland



The Ewart Library The most noted Renaissance style library in Scotland. The library was named after William Ewart, the former Member of Parliament for Dumfries. Ewart was responsible for the introduction of the Free Libraries Acts of 1850 in England, and 1853 in Scotland, allowing public libraries to be supported by local taxation for the first time.

The Queensberry Monument, Dumfries, Scotland



The Queensberry Monument was erected in 1780, and moved for a while to a site in front of what are at present the Dumfries and Galloway Regional Council Offices. It was moved back to Queensberry Square in 1990, with the pedestrianisation of the Town Centre. Designed by Robert Adam, the monument demonstrates the esteem in which Charles, Third Duke of Queensberry, was held by Dumfries people.

Dumfries Academy, Dumfries, Scotland



Dumfries Academy has existed since the 14th century, making it the earliest school in the Dumfries area.

Early records show that John of Greyfriars, a monk, was appointed rector of a new school in Dumfries in 1330. Being a church school it concentrated on the study of religious texts, but in the centuries which followed other schools built in the town which taught subjects such as Brewing, Mathematics, English, Baking and Needlework became integrated into the Academy building.
